BIOGRAPHY

Kempmug.crop1.2012.jpg

I paint the human body as both a metaphor and the thing itself: it is life. Our bodies are the core of all we can know and experience about our world.

Though we are in one sense solitary beings limited by the wavelengths that we can see, the vibrations that we can hear, and our senses of taste, touch and smell, still we are able to feel and express constellations of meaning. Painting is my expression of gratitude for this opportunity.

I agree with painter Jenny Saville when she said "I paint flesh because I'm human. Flesh is just the most beautiful thing to paint." Beyond this physicality, the human body can express emotional depth, from love to loneliness, alienation to bliss, tension to transcendence.

I have been drawing the human figure since I was a teen. I've been drawn to other subjects and media over the years, but I've always returned to painting and drawing the human form. It is now my work's focus.

I'm a contemporary realist, and while I sometimes use techniques of 17th Century painting, I also relate to the Neo-expressionist painters of the 70's and 80's, such as Eric Fischl, David Salle and Robert Longo.

When not painting I am rarely without a camera, focusing on nature and travel
